Breathe with Conscious Intent - "HA" me maka ala

Posted on Apr 3rd, 2008 by Mark : Visionary Mark
Make a supreme effort to breathe with conscious intent,
for what you think and say will eventually become
reality.

People are co-creators with the "One" who has given its
offspring the ability to create goodness in life.

Those who remain unconscious by ignorance or by
choice, create the things that "go bump in the night."

Those mis-creations are Mea ho'o pilikia, troublesome, incorrigible, things.
Take heart in knowing that all thoughts can be reversed and denied material
existence by mentally nullifying and replacing negative resolves,
while proper action and exhaling solves.

So, for the glory of humanity, wake up and breathe with conscious
intent!

The Mission Statement that Changed the World

Posted on Apr 4th, 2008 by Mark : Visionary Mark
Dr. Stephen R. Covey was asked to talk about one of his personal heroes, and brought up Mahatma Gandhi’s personal mission statement:

“Let the first act of every morning be to make the following resolve for the day:
  • I shall not fear anyone on Earth.
  • I shall fear only God.
  • I shall not bear ill will toward anyone.
  • I shall not submit to injustice from anyone.
  • I shall conquer untruth by truth. And in resisting untruth, I shall put up with all suffering.”
Gandhi held no formal authority -- no position. Yet because he had moral authority, he had influence. Gandhi changed the lives of over 300 million people using his moral authority.

Gandhi also created the alternative of non-violent action. He did not run away, and he did not fight, as most people do. Instead, Gandhi worked within himself until he won the private victory and learned the philosophy of his life. Non-violent action; a third alternative.

Childhood Unplugged

Posted on Apr 14th, 2008 by Mark : Visionary Mark

Our family has been very blessed with raising our children slightly out of the plugged in culture.  We started home schooling our son when he was 7 allowing us to do more as a family.   We moved part of our work schedules home so we could be with him more, eat together and share our lives more fully.  Moving to Kauai in 2003 was another way for us to unplug our family.  We think it has made a difference in our son’s ability to be more present.  We still deal with the consumer culture.  Our children still want far more things than I ever though I needed at their age.  Its an interesting world we live in this consumption culture.  I don’t see how it can be sustainable forever.

I found a great article at Ode online about a parents desire to save her children from consumerism.  Here is the beginning of the article.  The rest is available by following the link.

My struggle to save my kids from consumer culture

A war is raging between parents trying to raise children and corporate America trying to raise customers. As a parent of three children, I think I’m losing, or at least losing my mind. I’ve tried to educate my children about our materialistic society and how our family values differ from those of a culture of consumption. My kids, however, want more, buy more and throw away more.

I’ve decided advertising is my biggest enemy. Thanks to ads, my kids won’t take no, no, no for an answer and instead nag, nag, nag. Advertising targeted to children in the United States is estimated at more than $16.8 billion annually, over twice what it was in 1992.

The Warrior Club

The Warrior Club

I was fortunate to see Dr. Carl Hammerschlag live a few years back at an Aveda conference and have followed his writtings, blogs and video posts ever since.

My favorite take away from this video from Dr. Hammerslag -

... a good man will honor the teachings of his elders, but a warrior will look at the old landscape with new eyes and make his own decisions.

Recycled Glass Mandala

Kauai's recycling center has a demostration area for uses of recyled materials.  This mandala was created from a photograph of the recycled glass that was being used as ground cover around plantings at the recycling center.

Humanity Comes Before Religion

Here is another secret of life: it doesn’t matter how you pray or how often, a person of faith is one whose humanity comes before their religion.
